Goa has been facing heavy rainfall in 2024, causing many problems and incidents. The Ponda City Main nullah, also known as Kapilesharim Nullah, overflowed because of heavy rains. This flooding affected fields and roads in downstream villages like Kavlem and Bandora. Residents blame the flooding on the nullah not being cleaned regularly.

They also point to encroachments and constructions in the nullah basin that have made the situation worse. There are concerns that proposed infrastructure projects, like the bypass road from Zareshwar Temple to Kapilesharim Underpass, might make downstream flooding even worse. Urgent actions needed include desilting culverts, proper drainage systems, and better environmental planning.
Consua-Cortalim Tree Uprooting
In Consua-Cortalim, nearly 80 trees were uprooted because of heavy rains and gusty winds. The entire village faced a situation similar to a cyclonic storm in just 10 minutes. The falling trees caused power outages and disruptions in the area.
Kundaim Tragedy
In Kundaim, three construction workers lost their lives when a retaining wall collapsed during heavy rainfall. Several areas faced flooding, rivers swelled, and landslides blocked roads, making the situation very difficult.
Rescue at Waterfall
Authorities rescued 150 people who were stranded at a popular waterfall in North Goa's Sattari region due to heavy rains. Unfortunately, this incident claimed three lives, highlighting the need for safety precautions during the monsoon season.
IMD Red Alert
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red alert for the next five days, warning of heavy rains and adverse weather conditions in both North and South Goa. This alert means people need to be careful and stay updated with the weather reports.

The Impact of Heavy Rainfall
The heavy rains have brought both natural and man-made challenges to Goa. In Ponda, the overflow of the main nullah disrupted daily life, flooding fields and roads. The lack of regular cleaning and the presence of illegal constructions in the nullah basin have been major factors in this flooding. Residents are worried about future infrastructure projects making the flooding worse. Immediate measures like cleaning culverts, improving drainage systems, and better environmental planning are essential.
In Consua-Cortalim, the sudden uprooting of trees due to heavy rain and strong winds created a scenario similar to a cyclonic storm, causing power outages and disrupting daily life. The quick and severe nature of the storm caught many residents off guard.
In Kundaim, the tragedy of three construction workers losing their lives due to a collapsing retaining wall during heavy rains brought attention to the dangers of such weather conditions. Flooded areas, swollen rivers, and landslides have made transportation and daily activities very challenging.
The incident at the waterfall in North Goa's Sattari region, where 150 people were rescued but three lives were lost, underscores the need for increased safety measures during the monsoon season. Authorities need to ensure that tourists and locals are aware of the dangers and have the necessary support and information to stay safe.
