Geeta Mandir Campus Beautification: What Guwahati Residents Can Expect

Guwahati, the largest city in Assam, is home to many beautiful and historic sites. One such place is Geeta Mandir, a temple with significant tourist potential. Situated on Bamuni Pahar in the eastern part of Guwahati, Geeta Mandir is surrounded by valuable teak and Sal trees that help maintain the ecological balance in the area. The temple is located on a hillock off Mother Teresa Road (formerly Zoo-Narengi Road), providing a serene environment for visitors.

Geeta Mandir Guwahati

The idea of Geeta Mandir was conceived by the late Dr. Mahendra Mohan Choudhary, who was the Chief Minister of Assam and Governor of Punjab during the 1960s. In October 1969, the Geeta Samaj committee was formed to oversee the religious and charitable purposes of the temple. Approximately 25 bighas of land were allocated to the temple complex, and the foundation stone for the guest house and library block was laid on December 6, 1971. On April 15, 1975, the foundation stone for the temple itself was laid by then Chief Minister of Punjab, Giani Zail Singh. He later inaugurated the temple on December 11, 1981, when he was the President of India. The guest house and library were opened in 1992.

The temple was designed to resemble the temples of Mathura, shaped like a chariot to represent the Divine Chariot of Lord Krishna. The entrance gate, depicting scenes from the Mahabharata, was carved by a famous idol maker from Calcutta. The site was chosen for its panoramic views and lush green surroundings. Unfortunately, over the years, encroachment in the adjoining hill areas for development purposes has obstructed these views.

To enhance the experience for pilgrims and visitors, there is a need to develop the entire hill area on which the temple complex is located. This development should start from the foothill on Zoo-Narengi Road, where the Geeta Mandir Road begins, and continue up to the temple at the top of the hillock. The objectives of this project include:

1. Safety and Security: Ensuring the safety and security of the temple structure, pilgrims visiting the temple, and people passing through the temple complex.
2. Renovation: Revamping the deteriorating conditions of the temple and its associated structures.
3. Infrastructure: Providing basic infrastructure to ensure a satisfying and comfortable experience for pilgrims.
4. Employment Opportunities: Generating employment and self-employment opportunities for the local community by involving them in tourism activities.
5. Economic Growth: Contributing to the overall economic growth of the area.

The government has given administrative approval for the project titled "Beautification of Geeta Mandir Campus and Its Surrounding Areas (Part-1 and 2)." The project, with a total budget of approximately Rs. 3.94 crore, was approved under the financial year 2021-22. Part-1 has been allocated Rs. 1,98,64,000.00, and Part-2 has been allocated Rs. 1,95,50,000.00, both approved on February 19, 2022. The project focuses on the repair and renovation of the temple and its associated structures, along with the development of basic infrastructure.

The contract for the project has been awarded to M/s Dhansiri Associates. The project aims to create an enriching experience for visitors by improving the overall infrastructure and aesthetic appeal of the Geeta Mandir complex. The work includes enhancing pathways, installing proper lighting, and providing amenities such as clean restrooms and seating areas. The project is expected to be completed by this year.

Once the beautification project is completed, visitors to Geeta Mandir can look forward to a more pleasant and fulfilling experience. The improvements will not only attract more tourists but also benefit the local community by boosting tourism and creating job opportunities.

The beautification of Geeta Mandir and its surrounding areas is a much-needed project that promises to enhance the spiritual and aesthetic appeal of this historic temple. Guwahati residents and tourists can look forward to enjoying a beautifully renovated temple complex 2024. This initiative is a step towards preserving the cultural heritage of the region while promoting tourism and economic growth.
