Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to undergo pre-monsoon maintenance, necessitating the closure of both its primary runway 09/27 and secondary runway 14/32 for six hours on May 9, from 11 am to 5 pm. The closure, part of Mumbai International Airport Ltd's (MIAL) preparations for the monsoon season, aims to ensure safe and efficient operations. Airlines and stakeholders were informed in December through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), allowing them to adjust flight schedules accordingly. Despite the closure, minimal disruption is expected, with assurances that passenger flights will not be affected.
Spread over 1,033 acres, Mumbai Airport's extensive infrastructure, including runways, taxiways, and aprons, requires regular maintenance to uphold safety standards. The annual maintenance routine involves thorough inspections of runway surfaces to address any wear and tear resulting from daily use. These measures are vital for strengthening the airport's airside areas and ensuring their long-term durability.
Handling approximately 950 flight movements daily, Mumbai Airport prioritizes the smooth functioning of its operations. The primary runway 09/27, measuring 3,448 meters long and 60 meters wide, and the secondary runway 14/32, spanning 2,871 meters in length and 45 meters in width, accommodate a wide range of aircraft.
While the temporary closure may inconvenience some travelers, it is a necessary step in maintaining the safety and efficiency of Mumbai's international airport, ultimately ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.
