Ahmedabad experienced a sudden and heavy downpour late on May 28, which caused flooding in many areas of the city. The state weather department had already predicted rain across Gujarat, and the forecast turned true as the city received about one inch of rainfall within just two hours. The strong winds and rainfall affected both eastern and western parts of the city.

Different Areas Received Different Amounts of Rain
The western areas of Ranip, Jagatpur, and New Ranip received between half to two inches of rain. Areas like Ashram Road, Paldi, Vasna, Jamalpur, and Usmanpura recorded nearly two and a half inches. Chandlodia, Science City, Jodhpur, Satellite, Shyamal, and Vastrapur got around one inch. In the eastern parts, Memco, Viratnagar, and Odhav saw about one and a half inches, while Ramol, Nikol, Kathwada, Vatwa, and Sardarnagar had between half to one inch.
Heavy Rain Leads to Waterlogging and Inconvenience
Because of the sudden downpour, water started collecting in low-lying areas. Places like Ashram Road and Saraspur faced major waterlogging. Even after more than five hours of no rain, water was still standing in many parts of the city. The area near Vora Roja in Saraspur was badly affected. This waterlogging caused traffic jams and made it hard for people to move around. AMTS bus services were also stopped near the Saraspur Safe Society due to the water.
Drainage System Fails to Handle the Rain
One of the major problems during the rain was the failure of the city's drainage system. Instead of helping to remove the water, the drainage lines started to overflow with sewage water. This happened thirteen times in one evening, showing how much pressure the rain put on the system. Flooded roads and sewage backups made it more difficult for residents to deal with the situation.
Morning Trouble and Stranded Vehicles
The next morning, the effect of the rain was still visible. Ajit Mill Road and nearby areas were flooded. An AMTS bus got stuck under a bridge due to the water. Motorists had a tough time passing through the flooded roads, and the condition remained poor even after the rain had stopped.
Need for Better Infrastructure in Ahmedabad
The heavy rain and flooding on May 28 showed that Ahmedabad needs better drainage and sewage systems. The city struggled to deal with the effects of just a few hours of rain. To avoid such problems in the future, the local authorities need to improve the city's infrastructure and prepare better for rainy weather.
