A groundbreaking moment has arrived for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor project as the first mountain tunnel reaches completion. The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has achieved this remarkable feat in a mere 10 months of dedicated construction efforts.

First Mountain Tunnel for Mumbai-Ahmedabad

Situated approximately 1 kilometer from Zaroli Village in Umbergaon Taluka, Valsad district, Gujarat, this tunnel is a marvel of modern engineering. It encompasses not only the tunnel itself but also a tunnel portal and various connecting structures, including a tunnel entrance hood.

The construction of this tunnel adheres to the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), involving a meticulously planned sequence of activities:

- Marking of drill holes on the tunnel face
- Drilling of holes
- Charging of explosives
- Controlled blasting
- Removal of excavated material (rock pieces)
- Installation of primary support structures, including steel ribs, lattice girders, shotcrete, and rock bolts, tailored to the geological conditions determined by experts after each blast.

- Diameter of Tunnel: 12.6 meters

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is an ambitious project poised to transform rail travel in India. Spearheading this endeavor is the NHSRCL, established on February 12, 2016, under the Companies Act, 2013. It operates as a 'Special Purpose Vehicle' in the joint sector, with equity contributions from the Central Government through the Ministry of Railways and two State Governments: Gujarat and Maharashtra.
