Bhopal Metro Launches Passenger Services on December 21 with Token-Based Entry

Bhopal Metro is preparing to start passenger services on December 21, but for now, travellers will have to use physical tokens to ride the trains. Smart cards and digital passes will not be available immediately and will only be introduced at a later stage. In the beginning, the travel process

will be mostly manual, even though the system includes several modern features.

Opening of Bhopal Metro

Once the metro opens, passengers will enter the station, go up to the concourse level, and collect a physical token from the counters. After collecting the token, they will go through security checks and then move toward the platforms to board their train. These tokens will act as tickets and must be tapped at the entry gates before entering the paid area.

First Operational Stretch of Bhopal Metro

The first operational stretch of the Bhopal Metro will cover around 7 km and include eight stations. This is only the initial phase. When the full 16 km corridor from Karond to AIIMS Bhopal becomes ready, authorities plan to introduce the Common Mobility Card. This card will allow passengers to travel on both the metro and city buses with a single card. It will also support cashless payments through UPI, making the whole travel experience easier and faster.

Usage of Physical Tokens

Once the system is fully launched, commuters will have the option to continue using physical tokens or switch to the Common Mobility Card, which will provide a quicker, digital alternative. The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) is expected to announce the final fare structure soon. Current indications suggest that the fares may be similar to the Indore Metro, with ticket prices ranging from ₹10 to ₹20.

Bhopal Metro's Specialities

Inside the trains, special arrangements have been made to support inclusivity. Each coach will have four seats reserved for women and two for people with disabilities. Overall, while the first phase will feel simple and manual, officials say the shift to smart cards later will represent a major step forward for public transport in Bhopal.
