Indian Railways is about to make two more 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trains by the end of March 2026, which are going to be built at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Right now, there are already two such sleeper services running on Indian Railways, mainly on the Howrah-Guwahati

route.
First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has 16 coaches and was officially launched on January 17, 2026, by the Prime Minister. These trains are special because they are designed for long overnight journeys, combining speed and comfort with modern features. Each train can carry around 823 passengers, with a mix of Third AC, Second AC, and First AC coaches. They are built to be safer, with features including automatic doors with vestibules, comfortable berths with improved cushioning, advanced safety systems like Kavach & Emergency talk-back system, driver cab with advanced controls & safety system, disinfectant technology to improve sanitation, and aerodynamic exteriors.
New Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains with 24 Coaches
ICF is also working on even larger Vande Bharat Sleeper trains with 24 coaches. These trains will carry more than 1,200 passengers and will have extra features, including an AC pantry car and advanced technology for smoother travel. The first such 24-coach train is expected to be ready by the end of 2026.
Moreover, the railways' goal is to give passengers better overnight travel options. These trains will help people travel long distances more comfortably and quickly than before. They are part of the railways' larger plan to upgrade the network with faster, more modern trains to improve the travel experience across the country.
