Mumbai's metro network is set to grow with the addition of Metro Line 14, also called the Magenta Line. This new 45-kilometre line will connect Kanjurmarg in Mumbai to Badlapur in Thane district. Once it becomes operational, daily travel between these two points-currently taking around two hours by road-could be cut to less than an hour. That's a big relief for thousands of people who commute every day.
The Magenta Line will feature approximately 40 stations along its 45-km stretch, incorporating both elevated and ground-level tracks. Key stations planned include Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, Mahape, Ghansoli, Ambernath, and Badlapur. These stations will connect major residential and industrial zones, easing travel for thousands of commuters daily.

When Will It Start?
The construction of this metro line is expected to begin in 2026, once all required approvals are in place. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has already made progress on several permissions. At the moment, they are hiring experts to carry out environmental and forest impact assessments.
This step is important because the planned route will pass through some ecologically sensitive areas, including the Parsik Hills and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Ensuring that the project respects and protects the environment is a key part of the planning process.
Project Cost and Funding Model
This line will be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Efforts are being made to avoid issues encountered in previous metro projects. Private firms have until 28 July to submit their bids for this venture.
Once operational, over seven lakh passengers are expected to use this route daily. This will alleviate pressure on the already overcrowded suburban trains while expanding Mumbai's metro network beyond 330 km.
The new line will feature interchanges at Kanjurmarg, connecting with Metro Lines 4 and 5. This integration aims to streamline travel across different parts of the city efficiently.
