Donkey milk, long known for its health benefits and historical significance, is set to make its debut in the Indian market. The Indian government has confirmed efforts to increase donkey milk production and improve the breed of donkeys through the National Livestock Mission (NLM). This initiative could position India as a key player in the global donkey milk industry, which is gaining popularity due to its similarity to human milk and potential health benefits.

A Rich History of Donkey Milk
Donkey milk has been valued for centuries, with its medicinal properties first documented by Hippocrates in 460-370 BC. In the 19th century, it was used to breastfeed orphaned babies in France due to its close similarity to human milk. Donkey milk has also been a source of nutrition for weak children and the elderly in Europe for decades.
Donkeys, domesticated since 4000 BC, are part of the horse family. However, their population is declining globally. In India, the Livestock Census 2019 reported only 1.12 lakh donkeys, marking a 61.23% decline compared to 2012. The reasons include reduced use for transport and illegal slaughtering for meat and cosmetics.

Health Benefits of Donkey Milk
Donkey milk is rich in vitamins and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. It has low fat content, making it easier to digest for those who are lactose intolerant. High levels of lysozyme, an enzyme in donkey milk, help boost immunity by fighting harmful bacteria and viruses. Additionally, its antimicrobial properties give it a longer shelf life, lasting up to 4 days at 4°C.
Global Demand and Current Limitations
Countries such as France, Italy, the U.S., and China are already consuming donkey milk, but India has yet to list it as a food item. While studies by the CSIR-CFTRI and FSSAI confirm its safety, social taboos, low milk yield, and lack of legislative approval limit its commercialization in India.

Government Initiatives to Boost Donkey Milk Production
The Indian government, under the NLM, is supporting entrepreneurs and farmer groups to improve donkey breeds and increase production. Haryana is set to become a hub for donkey milk production. ICAR-NRCE in Hisar is training stakeholders, conserving the Halari donkey breed, and developing products like therapeutic and cosmetic items from donkey milk.
As the government continues its efforts, donkey milk is expected to hit Indian markets soon, offering a new and health-conscious alternative to traditional milk sources.
