In a significant announcement, Sri Lanka is considering extending the visa exemption status for Indian travelers beyond the originally stipulated date of 31 March 2024. The year 2023 marked a significant upturn for Sri Lanka's tourism sector, with the island welcoming 1.27 million tourists in the first 11 months, thereby generating a substantial revenue of $1.8 billion. This remarkable growth reflects a 78.3% increase in tourism income compared to the same period in 2022, as reported by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). Notably, Indian travelers topped the list of international visitors, demonstrating the strong ties and mutual benefits of tourism between India and Sri Lanka.
Strengthening Ties with India
In an effort to further solidify its relationship with India, Sri Lanka initiated visa-free entry for Indian passport holders from December 2023 to March 31, 2024. This strategic move aimed at boosting tourism and assisting Sri Lanka in overcoming its economic challenges. Harin Fernando, speaking at OTM in Mumbai, emphasized India's significant contribution to Sri Lanka's recovery and expressed the country's intent to make Sri Lanka an effortlessly accessible destination for Indian tourists. With plans to extend visa exemptions to more countries, India remains a top priority, reflecting its importance as a key source market for Sri Lanka's tourism industry.
