Water Metro services linking Thoppumpady and Edakochi are expected to start by 2027, according to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) Chairman and Managing Director Loknath Behera. He also stated that desilting work in Mattancherry will begin within the next two to three months to solve problems caused by low tides,

which often lead to service disruptions. Behera shared this update while speaking at an interactive programme organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) in Mattancherry on Wednesday.
Transport Infrastructure
He emphasized that development plans should give top priority to transport infrastructure. According to him, coastal areas with canals and backwaters should naturally focus more on water-based transport. He added that proper studies and public involvement are required to design services that truly match the needs of local people.
Cancellation of Water Metro Services
While the frequent cancellation of Water Metro services due to low tide, Behera said desilting work in Mattancherry would start soon. He explained that once the desilting is completed, Water Metro operations will become smoother and more dependable. He also stated that more boat services will be added as the Water Metro network expands.
Water Metro terminals at Thoppumpady & Edakochi
Behera further said that Water Metro terminals at Thoppumpady and Edakochi are part of the project plan and are expected to be completed by 2027. He highlighted the importance of restoring Mattancherry's historic role as a trading hub. Better transport connectivity, he said, could help revive traditional businesses and boost economic activity in the area.
How Will the Project Benefit Commuters?
ICCI president Raj Kumar Gupta spoke about the need for affordable and reliable services. He said people want regular boat services that do not stop because of high or low tides and are reasonably priced. He also pointed out that smooth connections between nearby Water Metro jetties are very important for commuters.
Gupta added that the proposed expansion and desilting work would strengthen water transport in Kochi's coastal areas and reduce pressure on roads.
ICCI vice-president Chirag J Shah thanked Behera for interacting with local stakeholders and focusing on Mattancherry's development. He said such discussions help ensure that infrastructure projects reflect the hopes and needs of the local community.
