Delhi's Battle Against Air Quality Crisis: Odd-Even Scheme to Be Enforced Soon

Delhi's Air Quality update:

The air quality in Delhi hit a new low on Monday, hovering in the 'severe plus' category, signifying a health emergency. To combat this alarming situation, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), imposing stringent measures.

The Delhi government also introduced several initiatives, including school closures, free mask distribution, and the launch of a green war room. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal chaired a high-level meeting, emphasizing the need for a cracker-free Diwali. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) upped its train trips to encourage public transport usage.

The Air Quality Crisis in Delhi: Measures and Impact

The recent surge in Delhi's air pollution has prompted a series of emergency actions. The CAQM implemented Stage IV of the GRAP, enforcing bans on certain vehicles' entry and construction activities linked to linear public projects.

The Delhi government's initiatives, such as school closures and free mask distribution, aim to mitigate the health risks associated with the deteriorating air quality. Additionally, the DMRC's increased train trips aim to reduce vehicular emissions, thereby contributing to pollution control efforts.

Factors Leading to Deteriorating Air Quality in Delhi

Unfavorable meteorological conditions, including low wind speed and high humidity, impede pollutant dispersion, exacerbating the situation. Stubble burning in neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana adds to the rising concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 particles in the air. Despite the challenging scenario, the authorities remain hopeful for improved conditions, with changing wind patterns expected to bring some relief from Tuesday night onwards.

Delhi's Odd-Even Scheme: A Strategy to Combat Rising Air Pollution

Delhi's Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced the implementation of the odd-even scheme, slated to run from November 10 to November 17, except on Sundays. This traffic rationing measure permits vehicles with odd or even registration numbers to ply on alternate days, with specific exemptions in place.

The odd-even scheme aligns with the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and seeks to minimize vehicular emissions, encourage public transport usage, and promote eco-friendly modes of transportation. Minister Rai urged residents to support the initiative and celebrate Diwali in an environmentally conscious manner.

Understanding PM2.5 and PM10: Impact on Health and Environment

PM2.5 and PM10, types of particulate matter suspended in the air, possess the potential to impact human health and the environment significantly. These particles, arising from various sources like dust and smoke, can result in respiratory problems, reduced visibility, and altered climate patterns. To address this concern, countries worldwide have established standards for PM2.5 and PM10 levels, advocating the implementation of emission-reducing measures and individual precautionary actions.
