On a frigid winter morning in New Delhi, the visibility was significantly reduced due to a dense layer of fog, making it a challenge for locals to commute, with some opting to ride bicycles through the enveloping mist. The cold wave gripping the city has not only brought down temperatures but also affected daily activities.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the capital is likely to experience clear skies throughout the day, despite the early morning fog. However, as the week progresses, the weather is expected to take a turn with predictions of rain due to western disturbances. Specifically, light rain is anticipated in various parts of Delhi on December 23, followed by light to moderate rainfall on December 26 and 27, just after Christmas.

The capital's weather took a chilly turn with the mercury dropping, as evidenced by the maximum temperature on Saturday reaching 23.4 degrees Celsius, which is slightly above the usual for this time of year. Conversely, the minimum temperature dipped to 7.6 degrees Celsius, marking a degree below what is typically expected. This fluctuation in temperatures comes amidst a backdrop of moderate and light fog episodes, affecting visibility across different parts of the city, including near Safdarjung and IGI Airport. The visibility at Safdarjung was reduced to 200 meters for a brief period on Saturday morning, while at IGI Airport, it was slightly better at 600 meters.
Looking ahead, the weather in Delhi is set for more variations. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday, anticipating moderate to dense fog conditions. Additionally, the department has forecasted very light rain or drizzle in numerous areas on Monday, with the possibility of light rain on December 26 and more widespread light to moderate showers on December 27. Following this, the cold is expected to intensify, marking a significant shift in weather patterns as December progresses.
In response to these changing conditions, the weather department has also sounded a yellow alert for December 27, signaling the residents and authorities to prepare for the expected weather changes. This comes in the wake of moderate fog observed on Saturday morning, which led to decreased visibility across the city, including near key areas such as Safdarjung and the IGI Airport. Despite these challenges, the city's maximum temperature on the preceding Friday was recorded at 23.3 degrees Celsius, with the minimum temperature slightly lower at 7.5 degrees Celsius, showcasing the fluctuating weather conditions Delhi is currently experiencing.
As the capital braces for the expected rainfall and a further drop in temperatures post-Christmas, residents are advised to stay prepared for cold and wet conditions. The weather department's forecast and alerts serve as a crucial guide for the city's inhabitants, ensuring they remain informed and ready for the upcoming weather changes. With the cold wave set to gain momentum after December 27, the end of the year in Delhi promises to be notably colder, urging everyone to bundle up and stay warm.
