The National Capital Region (NCR) is on the brink of a significant transportation upgrade. The 82km Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS), linking Delhi to Meerut, is set to be fully operational by late June or early July. This development promises to make travel between these cities as swift as a metro ride from Gurgaon to Connaught Place.

Currently, 55km of the corridor, stretching from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South, is already in service. Trial runs are being conducted on the remaining sections: a 4.5km stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and a 23km stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram. Approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is anticipated soon, paving the way for the entire corridor's launch.
Progress and Milestones
The project has been progressing steadily since its inception by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019. The first section, spanning 17 km from Sahibabad to Duhai, opened in October 2023. By March 2023, another 17 km stretch from Duhai to Modinagar North became operational. Later that year, an additional 8 km section from Modinagar North to Meerut South was launched.
In January 2024, the final segment of 13 km between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar was completed. This brought the total operational length to 55 km so far. With more sections opening gradually, over one crore riders have already used this corridor, marking a significant milestone in India's public transport evolution.
Meerut Metro Integration
The Meerut Metro line, covering 27 km and part of this corridor, is also nearing readiness for launch alongside the rest of the system. The final stretch will include three new stations in Meerut: Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. NCR Transport Corporation (NCRTC) officials have stated that technically, trains are already running across the full corridor. The non-functional stretch is ready for inspection with hopes for a full inauguration soon. This ambitious project has been under the leadership of NCRTC and aims to revolutionise commuting within the region by significantly reducing travel time between Delhi and Meerut.
