The Delhi government plans to construct a 4.5 km drain between Najafgarh Supplementary Drain and Mundka Haat Railway Station to tackle waterlogging in Kirari, according to an official statement. This new drain link with smaller drains in the Kirari area, helping to channel rainwater from nearby colonies.

On July 1, Delhi water minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi instructed officials to find solutions for the overflow of a central Delhi drain during heavy rains. The Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi Government is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Railways for this project. PWD minister Atishi has given her approval for this proposal.
Monsoon Challenges and Waterlogging
Delhi experienced its highest single-day rainfall in June in 88 years on June 28, causing significant disruptions across the city. With the monsoon season underway, waterlogging issues have worsened. The number of waterlogging-prone areas in the city has increased to 308, with 214 hypersensitive points located on roads managed by the PWD alone.
The hypersensitive points on roads managed by Delhi Municipal Corporation, New Delhi Municipal Council, DDA, and National Highway authorities have risen to 94. This increase highlights the growing challenge of managing water accumulation during heavy rains.
Impact on Residents
Since the onset of the monsoon in Delhi, at least 11 people, including four children, have lost their lives due to related incidents. The situation underscores the urgent need for effective drainage solutions to prevent further casualties and disruptions.
The new drain construction along the railway line aims to alleviate these issues by improving water drainage efficiency in affected areas. This initiative is part of broader efforts by the Delhi government to address infrastructure challenges exacerbated by heavy rainfall.
The statement also noted that addressing waterlogging is crucial for ensuring public safety and maintaining normalcy during monsoon seasons. The collaboration between PWD and Indian Railways is expected to expedite the project's completion and enhance its effectiveness.
This development comes as part of ongoing measures by local authorities to mitigate flooding risks and improve urban infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events.
