Delhi-Siliguri Bullet Train: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the train to pass through Many Cities

The Indian Railways is planning a massive high-speed rail network worth around ₹16 lakh crore that could transform long-distance travel across India. One of the most talked-about projects is a proposed bullet train corridor between Delhi and Siliguri, which could reduce travel time from nearly 20 hours to just 6 hours. The project is part of a larger plan to connect major cities through high-speed rail services.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the Delhi-Siliguri bullet train route would pass through important cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna. This corridor is expected to improve connectivity between northern, eastern, and northeastern India while making travel faster and more convenient for passengers.

The Delhi-Siliguri route is part of a broader plan to build seven high-speed rail corridors covering around 4,000 km. These proposed routes include Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri. Together, they aim to create a modern transportation network that can compete with air travel on many routes.

How will this Bullet Train Boost Connectivity?

The government believes these high-speed corridors will act as growth connectors, boosting trade, tourism, and economic development. They are also expected to provide a cleaner and more sustainable mode of transport compared to road and air travel.

India's first bullet train project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is already under construction, and the experience gained from it will be used in developing future corridors. Railway officials have also indicated that upcoming bullet trains may run at speeds of up to 350 kmph, making journeys significantly faster.

If these plans move ahead as proposed, India could witness one of the largest expansions of high-speed rail infrastructure in the world, bringing major cities much closer together and changing the way people travel across the country.
