Delhi-Siliguri Bullet Train announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Reducing Time to 6 Hours

A new bullet train project connecting Delhi and Siliguri has been announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The proposed high-speed rail corridor is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from around 20 hours to just 6 hours, providing a major boost to connectivity in eastern and northeastern India.

The Delhi-Siliguri bullet train will become one of India's major high-speed rail projects after the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. The route is expected to offer faster, safer, and more comfortable travel for passengers while significantly improving transportation links between northern and eastern regions of the country.

According to the announcement, the project is part of India's broader plan to expand its high-speed rail network. The government has identified several new bullet train corridors under the second phase of the national high-speed rail programme. Among these are the Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri routes, which together could form a fast rail connection between Delhi and Siliguri.

How will the Bullet Train Benefit Passengers?

The proposed corridor is expected to benefit millions of passengers by drastically cutting travel time. Currently, train journeys between Delhi and Siliguri take nearly 20 hours. Once the bullet train becomes operational, passengers could complete the journey in about six hours, making long-distance travel much more convenient.
The project is also expected to support tourism, trade, and economic development across several states along the route. Better connectivity could help businesses move people more efficiently and improve access to important cities and regional hubs. It may also strengthen links with the northeastern region, for which Siliguri serves as an important gateway.

While the announcement has generated considerable interest, details such as the final route alignment, station locations, construction schedule, and project cost are yet to be released. The proposal is currently in the planning stage, and further studies and approvals will be required before construction begins.

If completed, the Delhi-Siliguri bullet train could become one of India's most significant transportation projects, transforming rail travel by offering a fast and efficient alternative to conventional long-distance train journeys.
