15 degrees Celsius, and Mahendragarh saw a fall of nearly 20 degrees Celsius. The sudden change in weather came after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued several alerts warning about strong thunderstorms.

Delhi Rain Alert

The IMD has predicted more thunderstorms, light rain, and strong winds in Delhi-NCR till May 31. Temperatures are expected to remain lower for the next two days before gradually rising again next week.

Delhi's Nearby Areas Experienced Rainfall

Some areas also experienced heavy rain and hailstorms. Rewari in Haryana reported hail, while Hindon in Ghaziabad and Gurgaon received nearly 20 mm of rain by evening. Delhi's Safdarjung weather station recorded 3.3 mm of rainfall, and Palam received 3 mm of rain. Most weather stations in Delhi saw temperatures drop by around five degrees Celsius. Ayanagar recorded an 11-degree fall, Mehrauli around 10 degrees, and Narayana around 6 degrees. Gurgaon also saw a drop of nearly 12 degrees Celsius. Strong winds accompanied the storm. Wind speeds reached 61 kmph in Palam, 52 kmph in Pusa, and around 37 kmph in Safdarjung and Pitampura.

Reason behind the Weather Change

According to IMD scientists, the storms developed due to several weather conditions coming together. These included intense heating in northwest India over the past few days, moisture-filled easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, a western disturbance over the Himalayan region, and a cyclonic circulation near Rajasthan.

Humidity also increased sharply due to the arrival of moist easterly winds. The dew point rose from around 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday to nearly 21 degrees Celsius on Thursday, showing a major rise in moisture levels.
