Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: New 24-Km Faridabad, Haryana Section Now Open to Public

A newly completed 24-kilometer section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has opened in Faridabad, Haryana, marking a significant improvement in road connectivity. Although the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not yet disclosed an official inauguration date, vehicles have been using this section for about a month. Built at a cost of ₹1,729 crore, this stretch runs from Mithapur (Jaitpur Pushta) at the Delhi border to Kelly village in Ballabhgarh, promising to reduce traffic congestion on the main roads and highways in Faridabad.

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway Section Open

Improved Traffic Flow

The newly opened passage aims to relieve pressure on NH-19, which often experiences heavy traffic. Over 50,000 vehicles are expected to use this section daily, significantly reducing congestion on city roads. This expressway segment, part of the larger Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project, also connects to the Delhi-Agra Highway (NH-19), creating a smoother route for travelers heading in and out of Faridabad. The expressway itself starts at the DND Flyway in New Delhi, but the stretch within Delhi is still under construction and will not be ready soon.

Design and Structure

This expressway segment has been carefully designed to accommodate high traffic volumes. The 12-lane design features a six-lane main carriageway along with three-lane service roads on both sides, providing ample space for vehicles. These service roads improve access and ease traffic flow, helping to prevent bottlenecks. Package Three of the expressway, which includes this new 24-kilometer section, extends from near Sectors 62-65 in Faridabad to a junction close to the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal section of the Western Peripheral Expressway. This portion of the expressway opened to traffic in May 2023, adding another layer of connectivity for drivers.

Access and Toll Points

There are around six entry and exit points along this expressway section, making it easily accessible for local drivers and long-distance travelers alike. Currently, the NHAI is working on determining toll charges, especially since the first toll collection point is located in Kiranj village, about 25 kilometers from Kelly. The final toll rates are expected to be announced soon, as the NHAI continues to work on arrangements for the expressway's full operation.

Timeline and Completion

Construction for 'Package Two' of the expressway started on August 10, 2021, with an initial completion deadline set for August 10, 2023. However, this part of the expressway took longer than expected, with the work finishing 14 months past the original schedule. NHAI Project Director Dhiraj Singh has confirmed that while the road is now open for vehicles, the official inauguration date has yet to be announced. This delay underscores the ongoing work necessary for completing the larger Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project.

Future Benefits

Once fully operational, the expressway will make a significant impact on the daily lives of commuters in Faridabad, enhancing connectivity within the region. In addition to alleviating congestion, this infrastructure development supports economic growth by facilitating faster transport of goods and reducing travel times for both local residents and travelers. The direct route provided by the expressway will also help reduce the usual traffic found on major arterial roads.
