The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to turn its metro pillars into large-scale public art. In the first phase, artwork will be created on 200 metro pillars across the national capital. The aim is to make the city's transport spaces more attractive and meaningful for daily commuters.

Collaboration with Art Institutions
DMRC has invited non-governmental organisations and art institutions to join the project. The artworks will not only beautify the pillars but also spread awareness about social, civic, and environmental issues. Officials said the idea is to give artists a platform to express their creativity while also sharing important messages with the public.
Why is the Initiative Taken?
This initiative is meant to improve the travel experience and enhance the look of urban spaces. Selected metro pillars will be painted with themes related to nature, culture, and social awareness. Around 200 pillars have been identified for this work. About 50 pillars were completed earlier, and work on the rest is currently in progress. The project will gradually expand across the entire Delhi Metro network. As part of its larger policy to promote heritage, art, and culture, DMRC allows artworks to be displayed at metro stations and along metro structures. These displays are set up in designated and secure areas, keeping safety and operations in mind. The policy supports both permanent installations and short-term exhibitions.
What does the Artwork include?
The artwork includes stylised images of flowers, birds, animals, and other natural elements inspired by India's rich biodiversity. While the designs maintain a common visual style along each metro corridor, every pillar is treated as a unique piece of art. This allows variety while keeping an overall sense of unity.
In the past, metro stations have showcased handicrafts, photographs, paintings, and sculptures. With this new pillar project, DMRC hopes to further use public transport spaces as platforms for cultural expression, while ensuring commuter safety and convenience remain top priorities.
