a major environmental problem. She added that this project will help in the proper scientific recycling of used clothes.

Delhi Metro's Initiative

Under the initiative, old garments collected from metro stations will be sorted into different categories. Clothes that are still usable will be given to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs). These groups will reuse or upcycle the clothes into useful items such as bags, rugs, and other products. The clothes that cannot be reused directly will be sent to recycling units. There, they will be processed and converted into products like yarn, fibre, and non-woven felt. Officials said this will help reduce waste and support environmentally friendly practices.

List of Delhi Metro Stations

The 10 metro stations selected for this project are Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh. These stations are located on different metro lines across Delhi.

Monitoring of the Process

The Delhi government said it will make sure that the collected clothes are handled in a transparent and eco-friendly manner. Authorities will also monitor the process to ensure efficiency. Officials further said that DMRC will provide special spaces at some metro stations where products made from upcycled clothes can be displayed and sold. This will help encourage recycling and create awareness among commuters.
According to DMRC, the collection centres will be managed under the name Delhi Metro Ladies' Welfare Organisation (DMLWO). Officials said work related to installing the boxes, branding, and signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is currently underway. The initiative is expected to begin soon after all formalities are completed.
