Delhi Metro Introduces India’s First 3-Coach Small Train for Short-Distance Travel

In a major step to improve urban travel, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced the start of India's first metro corridor with three-coach trains. This new metro line will run between Lajpat Nagar and Saket G Block. It is specially designed to help people who travel short distances every day. The idea is to offer a fast, efficient, and affordable travel option to daily commuters.

Delhi Metro 3-coach train

This new metro line is part of the Phase-IV project of Delhi Metro. The line will be 8 kilometers long and is the second-smallest in the metro network. It aims to boost last-mile connectivity and make it easier for passengers to switch between different metro lines. By using smaller trains with three coaches instead of the usual four, six, or eight, DMRC wants to meet the unique travel needs of this route while keeping the system cost-effective.

Designed for better flow and comfort

This new line is carefully planned to meet the needs of short-distance passengers. The goal is to strike a good balance between the number of people using the metro during rush hours and the capacity of the trains. The three-coach setup is expected to increase the number of trips the trains can make, while still giving a comfortable journey to passengers.

Each three-coach train will be able to carry about 900 people in one trip. Every coach will hold nearly 300 passengers. This is seen as the right size for this route, which does not need larger trains.

There will be eight stations on this line. These will be located in important residential and business areas to make it easy for people to get on and off the metro. The platforms at these stations will be 74 meters long, which is the right size for the three-coach trains.

Work already started

In March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this special project. Now, the construction work has officially begun, and the metro line is expected to be ready by 2028.

DMRC officials say this project is an example of how urban travel can be improved by smart planning. It shows that the Delhi Metro is serious about giving better travel choices to the people of the city.

As work continues, this project is likely to set a new standard for metro travel in India. It will make daily travel easier and more comfortable for many people and support the growth of smart urban transport.
