The Delhi government has made the expansion of the Delhi Metro a key part of its plan to reduce air pollution in the city. To speed up work on Metro projects, the government has announced higher funding and has also decided to clear long-pending payments.

Approval of Important Metro Corridors
The state cabinet has approved financial support for three important Phase-IV Metro corridors. These include the routes from Lajpat Nagar to Saket, Inderlok to Indraprastha, and Rithala to Kundli. Senior officials said the government will contribute Rs 3,386.18 crore for these projects. Out of this amount, Rs 940 crore has already been released in the current financial year, and another Rs 336 crore will be provided soon.
Clearance of Pending Payments
Moreover, the government has decided to pay nearly Rs 2,700 crore in old dues linked to Metro Phases I, II, and III. The chief minister stated that clearing these pending payments is necessary to maintain the speed of Metro expansion and rebuild trust in long-term transport planning.
Metro Development
The focus on Metro development is also reflected in a major increase in the transport department's budget. The budget has gone up by almost 60%, from Rs 5,702 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 9,110 crore in 2025-26. Of this, Rs 2,929 crore has been set aside for Metro projects, compared to about Rs 500 crore last year.
Delhi Metro's Construction
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started construction on the 8-km Saket G Block to Lajpat Nagar corridor, part of the Golden Line. This elevated line will have eight stations and is expected to greatly improve travel in South Delhi by connecting residential, commercial, and office areas.
New Corridor
The new corridor will connect smoothly with existing Metro lines, making travel easier for commuters. It will also utilize India's first three-coach Metro trains, suitable for short urban routes. Each train can carry around 900 passengers. The chief minister stated that the goal is to build a Metro network so that more people choose public transport, helping create a cleaner and more sustainable Delhi.
