Delhi Announces New 5-km Tunnel to Connect Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road; Check Features

A major plan to ease traffic in Delhi has been announced. The Delhi government will build a 5-kilometre-long tunnel from Shiv Murti-Mahipalpur to Nelson Mandela Road in Vasant Kunj. This tunnel aims to reduce traffic jams, improve vehicle movement, and cut down pollution in South Delhi and nearby NCR areas.

Delhi Announces New 5-km Tunnel

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared the details of this project, which is part of six major infrastructure projects approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The tunnel is considered one of the most important projects. It will be built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) with a budget of ₹3,500 crore.

Tunnel Features and Technology

The tunnel will include two underground tubes. Each tube will have three lanes for smooth and fast vehicle flow. It will also be equipped with modern systems such as:

  1. Electro-mechanical setups
  2. Ventilation systems
  3. Fire safety measures
  4. CCTV surveillance
  5. Emergency exits and cross-passages
  6. Control rooms for safety and monitoring

These features will ensure the tunnel is safe and efficient for daily use.

Traffic Benefits

Officials said the tunnel will help reduce traffic on several busy roads like Nelson Mandela Road, Mahipalpur, and Rangpuri. It will also reduce the pressure on Dhaula Kuan, Rao Tula Ram Marg, and NH-48 by creating a signal-free route between South Delhi and areas like Dwarka and Gurugram.

In the future, this tunnel will also link Central and East Delhi with major highways such as NH-44, NH-10, NH-48, NE-5, NH-709B, and the Delhi-Dehradun expressway. This connection will be made through the Urban Extension Road and the Dwarka Expressway.

A Step Toward the Future

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said this project is a big step towards building a better and cleaner Delhi. She mentioned that the decision was made after a meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The central government has approved ₹24,000 crore worth of projects to reduce traffic in Delhi and nearby areas.

Construction of the tunnel is expected to begin early next year. CM Gupta said, "This tunnel will not only reduce the load on existing roads but will also transform the entire traffic scenario in South Delhi and surrounding areas."

The Delhi government hopes this tunnel will lay the foundation for the Delhi of the future-one that is better connected, less crowded, and more eco-friendly.
