Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport's Terminal 1 has undergone a significant expansion, as unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. This development, spearheaded by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the airport operator, is set to elevate the passenger experience to new heights, with operations commencing by May. The inauguration of this expanded terminal was part of a larger initiative that saw the PM launching 15 airport projects from Azamgarh.

Capacity Boost to 40 Million Passengers Annually
Post-expansion, Terminal 1 (T-1) is expected to handle 40 million passengers annually, effectively more than doubling its previous capacity. This expansion places Delhi airport among the elite global airports with the capability to service 100 million passengers per annum (MPPA). Comparatively, Terminal 3 serves around 45 MPPA, and Terminal 2 manages about 15-17 MPPA. The terminal's area has seen a significant increase from 55,740 sqm to 206,950 sqm.
Introduction of Aerobridges and Enhanced Conveniences
A notable upgrade is the introduction of 22 passenger boarding bridges at T-1, addressing the previous absence of aerobridges. This addition will streamline boarding processes, enabling direct aircraft access and eliminating the need for bus transportation. Furthermore, the terminal has been outfitted with state-of-the-art technologies, including a facial recognition system (DigiYatra) for entry, 20 automated tray retrieval systems, and individual carrier systems. The facility also features 108 common usage self-service facilities and 100 check-in counters, which include 36 self-baggage-drop kiosks.
Improved Baggage Handling and Passenger Flow
To further enhance the passenger experience, T-1 now boasts 10 baggage reclaim carousels, each 70 meters in length. This expansion from the previous eight carousels, which were 52 meters each, aims to significantly reduce waiting times. The baggage handling system's capacity has also been doubled, increasing from 3,240 bags per hour to approximately 6,000 bags per hour. Additionally, the number of check-in islands has been increased to five from four, ensuring a smoother flow of passengers through the terminal.
Operational Readiness and Accessibility Features
Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, highlighted the ongoing operational readiness and airport transfer procedures. With several agencies involved, personnel are currently familiarizing themselves with the new systems at T-1. This preparation is crucial for the terminal's full operational status. To cater to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), T-1 features designated zones on the kerbside, complete with lounge facilities, phones, and sunflower services. Within the terminal, elevated seating zones have been established for PRMs, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all passengers.
The expansion of Delhi's IGI Airport Terminal 1 not only promises to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the airport but also to significantly improve the overall passenger experience. With state-of-the-art facilities and increased operational capabilities, T-1 is poised to set a new standard in airport services in India.
