Central Railway in India ran 862 special trains with its usual services to handle the travel rush before Holi. These trains carried more than 24.18 lakh passengers between February 27 and March 2, 2026, as people rushed to reach their homes and celebrate the festival with family and friends.

Special Trains with Different Features
The special trains were of different types; some were fully air-conditioned, some were unreserved, and others had a mix of AC, sleeper, and general coaches. They connected many busy routes across the country, so that more people could travel comfortably.
Trains Operated by Central Railway
Out of 862 trains, 670 were run directly by Central Railway, which were full due to high demand. Some trains served towns and cities within Maharashtra, while others went to places in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Goa to meet the festive travel needs. In the four days before Holi, around 7 lakh passengers started journeys from Mumbai alone, highlighting how many people were travelling from big cities.
Ways to Handle the Festive Crowd
To keep things organized, the railway made special arrangements at stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Pune. They created holding areas where people waiting for trains could stand without crowding platforms too much.
Railway staff also worked to manage crowds by setting up covered waiting areas, lighting, more drinking water points, toilets, ticket help desks, and announcements. Security teams and railway police were on duty to keep travellers safe and ensure everything went smoothly.
Moreover, CR's large special train operation made it easier for people to travel long distances for Holi and manage the rush safely.
