COVID-19 Omicron Threat: Rapid RT PCR Rates Reduced Further To Rs 1,975 At Mumbai Airport

Following the new Covid-19 variant scare - Omicron, the Maharashtra state government on Tuesday reduced the charge of rapid RT-PCR testing to Rs. 1975 from the present rate of Rs 4,500 and a GR was issued for the same.

Laboratories are, however, allowed to charge an additional Rs 200 if rapid RT-PCR is performed while taking samples at home.

The main difference between normal RT-PCR tests and rapid PCR tests is the time taken to get the results. According to reports, normal RT-PCR test results take up to over 4-5 hours, while rapid RT-PCR test results are provided within 1-2 hours.

The decision was taken after the Center made RT-PCR tests compulsory for all passengers and tourists from "at-risk" countries.

State Health Minister Rajesh Tope further announced that there was a huge problem concerning the outrageous costs of rapid RT-PCR at airports and that finally, the committee appointed by the public health department reduced costs after several discussions.

"The reduction in costs will not only help travelers at the airport but also those who prefer rapid RT-PCR for early detection. The costs have been reduced by a little more than half ", shared the Minister.

Correspondingly, here are the cost of rapid RT-PCR across different cities in India.

At Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore, the charges for Rapid RT-PCR are ₹ 3000, RT-PCR is ₹ 500 and Rapid Antigen Test is ₹ 400.

At Delhi Airport, the rapid PCR test costs Rs 3,500 while a normal RT-PCR test costs Rs 500.

At Kozhikode Aiport, the rapid PCR test costs Rs 1,580.
