The Kochi Water Metro is planning to introduce fast electric-hydrogen hybrid boats for its proposed airport connectivity from Aluva, according to sources. This new move aims to greatly reduce travel time between Aluva and Cochin International Airport while also protecting the environment.

How Does Kochi Water Metro Run?
Currently, Water Metro ferries mainly run on battery power, with diesel generators used as backup. However, officials are concerned about possible battery shortages in the future and the pollution caused by diesel. Because of this, they are exploring cleaner, more sustainable alternatives. One such option is electric-hydrogen vessels, which release only water vapour and heat, making them one of the cleanest transport modes available.
How will the New Initiative Benefit Commuters?
The Chief Operating Officer of Kochi Water Metro Ltd, Sajan P John, said that fast boats are planned for the Aluva-airport stretch. With these boats, passengers can reach the airport terminal from Aluva in about 10 minutes, saving significant travel time compared to road transport.
Who is Responsible for Boat Development?
The boats are being developed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd, which is already constructing 23 Water Metro ferries. The company has also built India's first green hydrogen ferry, a zero-emission vessel that can carry 50 passengers and is now operating in Varanasi.
To ensure safe operations, a hydrology study is currently being conducted along the 8-km stretch of the Periyar River from Aluva to Nedumbassery and further to the airport through the Chengal Canal. The study will check whether fast boats could affect water flow. Once completed, a report will be submitted to the state government for project approval.
The project also plans to reduce road traffic and improve seamless travel, including a skywalk connecting Aluva Metro station with the Water Metro terminal. With hydrogen prices falling and further reductions expected, KWML believes hydrogen-powered transport is a strong long-term solution.
