Chennai to Get New Metro Line to Pattabiram, 7 Stations and 3 Flyovers Planned

The Tamil Nadu government has approved a major plan to improve city travel by extending the Chennai Metro Rail. This new metro line will run from Koyambedu to Pattabiram, covering a distance of 21.76 km. The project is expected to make daily travel easier for many people and support development in the western parts of Chennai.

Chennai to Get New Metro Line

This extension will cost ₹9,928.33 crore, as estimated in the financial plan for the year 2025. Along with the metro line, three new flyovers will be built to help reduce traffic jams and allow smoother travel on the roads.

Government Order and Project Report

The approval for this new corridor was given through a government order by the state's special initiatives department. The decision was based on a detailed project report (DPR) prepared by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The DPR suggested that the metro line should go beyond Avadi and reach Pattabiram. This extension will connect important locations like the Outer Ring Road and the ELCOT facility, making it easier for people to reach these areas.

Funding Plan and Infrastructure

The project will be funded by a mix of support from the central government and loans from international banks. This shows that both the state and central governments are working together to improve public transport in the city.

Out of the total cost, ₹464 crore has been kept aside for building three flyovers. These flyovers will be built in a way that they fit well with the city's roads and help reduce traffic problems.

Stations Along the New Route

The new metro corridor will have stations at Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College, and Pattabiram. These stations have been selected carefully to cover more areas and help more people use the metro for daily travel. This will make commuting easier and help reduce the use of personal vehicles.

From Study to Approval

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had asked CMRL to study the possibility of a metro line between Koyambedu and Avadi. After studying it, the plan was extended to reach Pattabiram. This shows the government's aim to improve travel in fast-growing suburbs of Chennai.

The state government has now sent the project report to the central government for final approval and financial support. Once approved, the project can begin soon.

This metro extension is a big step towards better city travel. It will reduce travel time, ease traffic, and help the city grow in a planned way.
