The Chennai Metro Rail achieved a major milestone in March 2026, carrying more than one crore passengers in a single month, and it is the third time monthly ridership has crossed the one-crore mark, showing a steady increase in the number of people using the metro.

Chennai Metro Increased Ridership
Between March 1 and March 31, a total of one crore passengers travelled on the Chennai metro network. During this period, the system also recorded its highest single-day ridership for the month, with 3,90,306 passengers using the service.
Chennai Metro's Ridership Record in 2025
This achievement follows similar records set in 2025. The metro first crossed the one-crore monthly ridership mark in July 2025, when it recorded 1.03 crore passengers. It again crossed this figure in September 2025, with 1.01 crore passengers. These numbers show that more commuters are choosing the metro as a reliable and convenient mode of transport.
Several Ticketing Options
Among the several ticketing options available, the NCMC Singara Chennai Card was the most popular choice. Nearly half of the passengers preferred using this card for their travel. Other ticketing methods include the CMRL Travel Card, single-journey paper QR tickets or tokens, and static QR codes available at metro stations.
The growing ridership reflects the increasing importance of the Chennai Metro in the city's public transport system. It also highlights how improved connectivity, convenience, and digital ticketing options are encouraging more people to use the metro regularly.
