Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has accelerated construction work on the Purple Line, Corridor 3, under its Phase II project. The work is progressing steadily on the Nehru Nagar-Sholinganallur stretch along the busy Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The faster pace of construction is expected to help complete the project on time and improve public transportation in one of Chennai's rapidly developing areas.

CMRL said that all 3,066 foundation piles needed for this section have been completed. The agency has also finished casting all 582 precast prestressed U-shaped girders, which will support the elevated metro tracks. These achievements mark important progress in the corridor's development.
Chennai Metro Stations on the Purple Line
The elevated section between Nehru Nagar and Sholinganallur will include several metro stations, improving connectivity for people travelling to IT parks, residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas along OMR. Construction teams are now working on other structural activities, station construction, and track installation.
The Purple Line is one of the three corridors being developed under Chennai Metro Phase II. After completion, it will connect Madhavaram Milk Colony in north Chennai to Siruseri SIPCOT in the south. The corridor will span around 45.8 km and include nearly 48 stations, helping passengers travel faster while reducing road congestion.
CMRL officials said work is being carried out across multiple sections at the same time to ensure timely completion of the project. The metro line is expected to offer a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly transport option for thousands of commuters every day.
How will Chennai Metro's Purple Line Benefit Passengers?
Once operational, the Purple Line will reduce travel time, encourage greater use of public transport and help ease traffic pressure on major roads, especially along the busy OMR corridor. The project will also strengthen connectivity between residential areas, educational institutions and Chennai's major IT hubs.
