Chennai is set to expand its metro network to improve transportation in the western suburbs. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has presented a detailed project report (DPR) for a new metro extension from Koyambedu to Pattabiram. This project will run along the Outer Ring Road and aims to provide a better travel option for people living in these areas. By connecting key transport points, the new metro line will make daily travel easier and faster.

New metro extension details
The proposed metro extension will cover a distance of 21.76 km. It will include 19 new elevated stations, allowing passengers to travel smoothly between important locations. The metro line will pass through Padi Pudhu Nagar, Mogappair, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, and Avadi before reaching Pattabiram. This expansion will provide a direct connection to important places like the Ambattur Estate Terminus, Avadi Railway Station, and Avadi Bus Terminus, making travel more convenient for passengers.
Estimated budget and infrastructure development
The estimated cost for this metro extension is Rs 9,744 crore. The project will not only improve public transport but also help reduce traffic congestion. To further support smooth travel, three integrated flyovers will be built at key locations. These flyovers will be located at the Ambattur Estate bus depot junction, near Dunlop, and in front of the Avadi Bus Stand. They will help reduce road traffic, making commuting easier for both metro and road users.
Improving city transport and connectivity
This metro extension will reduce the dependence on road transport and offer a faster, more reliable travel option for people in the western suburbs. With improved connectivity to major transport hubs, the project will support the growing needs of the city. As Chennai continues to expand, this metro project will help ensure that its transport system keeps up with increasing demand.
