CMRL Unveils Plan to Boost Pedestrian Safety Around 41 Chennai Metro Stations with DPR

More than ten years after starting operations, Chennai Metro Rail Limited has taken its first major step to improve walking conditions around Metro stations in the 54-km Phase I network. aim is to make it easier and safer for people to walk to and from stations, to support better first- and last-mile connectivity through feeder services.

Infrastructure Development

Officials said that within a 500-metre area around each station, footpaths will be redesigned and repaired. Where footpaths do not exist, new ones will be built. Street lighting will be improved, and more signboards will be installed to help people find their way easily. CMRL has already invited bids to appoint a consultant for this work. The selected firm will study each station area and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) with suggestions to make these places more pedestrian-friendly.

Other Transport Developments

Moreover, the plan will focus on better integration of different transport modes. This includes improving connections between Metro stations, city buses, intercity buses, MRTS, and other transport systems. Facilities like bus bays, parking spaces, foot-over-bridges, subways, covered walkways, bicycle parking, pick-up and drop-off zones, and spaces for autos and taxis will also be included. The consultant is expected to submit the report within four months, after which work will be carried out by the Greater Chennai Corporation.

Feeder Buses Operation

CMRL is also working with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation to run feeder buses, making it important to create safe walking routes to nearby bus stops.
However, commuters say current conditions are poor. Many stations lack proper footpaths, face encroachments, and even issues, including sewage overflow, making it difficult and unsafe to walk. Improving these conditions is necessary to encourage more people to use public transport.
