Chennai Metro Phase-2: Vadapalani to Poonamallee Clears Second CRS Detailed Checks & Speeds Testing

The safety inspections for a major part of Chennai Metro Rail's Phase-2 project, the stretch from Vadapalani to Poonamallee, have been completed. This section is about 15.8 km long and is expected to be one of the first parts of Phase-2 to open for passengers soon.

Second Round of Detailed Checks

Officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said that the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) finished a second round of detailed checks on this metro route, which included speed trials and control-centre tests. These inspections are necessary before the metro line can be opened to the public. If everything is approved, the final clearance from the Railway Board could come in a day or two. Once that happens, CMRL can begin passenger service, likely within the next few days.

Metro Trains with Different Speeds

During the trials, metro trains ran at different speeds between Poonamallee and Porur, as well as between Porur and Vadapalani, to ensure that the tracks, signalling systems, and safety features work properly. CRS also examined the backup systems at the Operations Control Centre in Nandanam.

When the route opens, some trains will operate at higher speeds on the Poonamallee-Porur section, while speeds might be lower between Porur and Vadapalani. Not all planned stations will open immediately. A few, especially in the middle of the stretch, are still being finished, so trains may skip them at first. However, passengers will still be able to use a skywalk to connect between this new phase and the existing Phase-I line at Vadapalani station.

Completing this stretch is an important step for Chennai's expanding metro network, bringing modern rail service closer to daily commuters in the western parts of the city.
