Switching between modes of transport during daily travel in Chennai may soon become much easier, as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning a major redesign of areas around 41 metro stations to turn them into well-connected multimodal hubs. For this, the agency has recently invited bids to prepare a

detailed project report (DPR). The plan will focus on improving areas within a 500-metre radius of each station.
Total Stations to be Included in the Project
All 41 stations, including key locations such as Chennai Central, Egmore, Guindy, Saidapet, and Alandur, will be covered under this project. The redesign will include better footpaths, shaded walkways, extended skywalks, and barrier-free access to make commuting safer and more convenient for everyone.
What does the Plan Propose?
The plan also aims to improve last-mile connectivity. It proposes dedicated pick-up and drop-off points, feeder services, and easier access for autos and taxis. Bus stops may be shifted closer to metro entrances to reduce walking distance, and parking areas will be better organised.
Why is the Step Important for Connectivity?
CMRL stated that this step is important for connectivity between different transport systems, enhancing commuter safety, and increasing metro usage. The move comes after many complaints about poor pedestrian facilities, unsafe crossings, and weak links between the metro, buses, MRTS, and suburban trains. However, commuters have welcomed the idea, as many currently struggle with last-mile connectivity. Busy areas like Guindy especially face heavy congestion and poor access. Experts believe this plan is a much-needed step towards building a more connected and efficient urban transport system.
