Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay jointly inaugurated the first operational stretch of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II on October 11, 2026. The two leaders flagged off the first train at Porur Bypass Metro station and travelled between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass stations.

Chennai Metro Phase II Corridor: Poonamallee & Vadapalani Line Opening
The newly opened corridor connects Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, covering approximately 14.6 km with 11 elevated stations, and was developed at a cost of around Rs 4,900 crore, marking an important expansion of Chennai's public transport network.
Before the inaugural ride, Prime Minister Modi received a briefing on the Chennai Metro Phase II project. He also purchased a paper QR-code ticket at the station before boarding the train with Chief Minister Vijay. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar attended the inauguration.
One of the major features of the project is a 3.7-km double-decker corridor, equipped with advanced signalling technology designed to support driverless train operations. However, the double-decker section between Porur Junction and Vadapalani, including six stations, is not yet operational.
Passenger Services Began on 11 October
Passenger services on the newly inaugurated stretch began at 4 pm on October 11 and continued until 9 pm. From October 12, regular services are scheduled to operate between 7 am and 9 pm. Trains will run every 10 minutes during peak hours, from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. During non-peak hours, services will operate every 15 minutes. On Sundays and public holidays, trains will run at 15-minute intervals throughout the day.
How will this Metro Corridor Benefit Passengers?
The new stretch is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai's rapidly developing western suburbs and the city centre. It will also help commuters reach the existing Metro network at Vadapalani, where they can transfer to Phase I services.
The inauguration marks a significant step in Chennai Metro's Phase II expansion, offering commuters another transport option and helping improve connectivity across the western parts of the city.
