The final speed trial for Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) Corridor 4 Phase II, from Vadapalani to Poonamallee Bypass, is likely to take place by the end of the third week of February. This trial will be conducted before the project receives final regulatory approval to start passenger services. The

Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has been carrying out mandatory safety inspections on this priority stretch for two days in a row. These inspections are an important step before commercial operations can begin.
Chennai Metro Elevated Section
Anant Madhukar Chowdhary, Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (Bengaluru Circle), inspected the elevated section between Iyyapanthangal and Vadapalani. This stretch covers 8.5 km and is part of the 14.64-km priority corridor.
What did the Inspection Focus on?
The two-day inspection, held on February 11 and 12, covered 11 Metro stations between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. Important stations along this route include Porur Junction and Iyyapanthangal. According to a CMRL statement, the inspection focused on checking electrical systems, track alignment, and civil structures. These checks are necessary to ensure the line meets all safety standards before allowing passengers to travel.
Chennai Metro Extension to Vadapalani
CMRL has decided to extend services up to Vadapalani instead of opening the line only till Porur Junction. Officials said that opening the line only up to Porur might not attract enough passengers because it would not connect directly with the operational Phase I Metro network.
By extending the corridor to Vadapalani, passengers will get better connectivity with the existing Metro system, which is expected to improve ridership. Once the speed trial and safety approvals are completed, commercial services on this stretch are expected to begin soon.
