The first operational stretch of Chennai Metro's Phase II project is expected to open on October 11, seven months after receiving regulatory approval. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the 14.6-km corridor during his visit to Tamil Nadu. According to Chennai Metro Rail sources, the Prime Minister's Office has informed Chennai Metro Rail Limited about the date, as Modi is expected to inaugurate the stretch as part of his Tamil Nadu visit.
Chennai Metro Phase II Project
The section is part of Corridor 4, also known as the Yellow Line, and connects Poonamallee Bypass with Vadapalani. It is the first section of the Phase II network to receive approval for commercial operations. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety cleared the stretch for operations in February, after which preparations for the launch continued.
The corridor will eventually become part of a larger east-west metro connection linking Chennai's rapidly developing western suburbs with the city's existing public transport network. Its opening is expected to provide an alternative route for commuters travelling on the increasingly congested roads in western Chennai and improve connectivity with existing Metro services.
At Vadapalani, passengers are expected to use a skywalk connecting the new Metro alignment with the existing Vadapalani Metro station. Work on the entry and exit facilities at the interchange is still in progress.
State BJP sources said Prime Minister Modi is also likely to inaugurate Vellore airport. The party is expected to receive him when he arrives in Chennai for the one-day visit, although no official party programmes have been scheduled so far.
