Construction of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project is progressing steadily, with tunnelling work now underway between the upcoming Nungambakkam and Sterling Road metro stations. The Nungambakkam station, located near the popular Khader Nawaz Khan (KNK) Road on Uthamar Gandhi Road, is expected to open in the next couple of years.
Chennai Metro Corridor 3
The underground tunnel is part of Corridor 3, which will connect Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Nungambakkam and Adyar. This corridor will span 45.8 km as part of the overall 118.9-km Chennai Metro Phase II network. The Sterling Road station is being built near Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Another station, called Anna Flyover Metro, is also coming up on Uthamar Gandhi Road near Ispahani Centre.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the tunnelling work between Nungambakkam and Sterling Road has recently begun and is expected to be completed by January next year. The underground section is around 500 metres long. Officials said the soil in the area is mainly clay, making the tunnelling process easier with no major challenges expected. Tunnel boring machines will dig beneath Uthamar Gandhi Road, Valluvar Kottam Road, and a few nearby buildings before reaching the Sterling Road junction.
How will the Chennai Metro Phase II Benefit Residents?
Once completed, the new metro stations are expected to improve connectivity for thousands of people. The area has several colleges, government offices, businesses, and residential neighbourhoods, making it an important transport corridor.
However, residents have urged CMRL to complete the project as quickly as possible. Ongoing construction has reduced road space and caused traffic diversions, creating inconvenience for daily commuters.
Wallace Garden resident Shoba Mothinath said the completed metro network would be a major benefit for people living in Nungambakkam. She noted that the existing Phase I metro has already made travel much easier, especially to Chennai Airport. However, she added that the authorities should avoid further delays and complete the work before the monsoon season, as construction has already been going on for several months.
