Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to start trial runs on the Koyambedu-Chennai Trade Centre section by November 2026. The trial phase is expected to continue for four months, during which the Metro system will undergo detailed testing before passenger services begin.

Chennai Metro Phase II Project
The nearly 26-km stretch is part of Chennai Metro's Phase II project. According to CMRL officials, around 90% of the track work on this section has already been completed. The remaining work is expected to be finished within the next 10 days.
CMRL Director (Projects) T Archunan said that about 1.5 km of track work is still pending. This includes around 300 metres on the double-decker section, nearly 150 metres near Koyambedu station, and some additional work in the Mugalivakkam area.
The Metro authority is also discussing whether the operational stretch can be extended up to Alandur. If approved, passengers could get a longer operational route when the line begins services.
Station entry and exit works are also expected to be completed by November. CMRL is simultaneously preparing the corridor for driverless train operations. The Metro authority has already conducted trials with driverless trains and has gained experience in operating them. The required software has also been installed on the trains.
Meanwhile, there is still uncertainty over the opening of the Vadapalani-Poonamallee section. The inauguration date has not yet been confirmed, as CMRL is waiting for information from the Prime Minister's Office.
How will this Corridor Improve Connectivity?
The Koyambedu-Trade Centre corridor is expected to improve connectivity across several important parts of Chennai and make travel easier for residents. Once testing and safety procedures are completed, the Metro authorities will move towards starting regular passenger services.
The November trial run will be an important step in checking the performance and safety of the new corridor before it is opened for public use.
