To make local travel easier and more affordable, the Transport Department of Tamil Nadu has introduced thousands of new mini-bus routes across the state. A total of 2,857 routes have been identified, including 2,010 new routes and 847 routes that will replace or continue from older ones. This move is expected to make daily commutes simpler for people living in areas with fewer transport options.

Permits for these routes were given after careful checking, and people who applied were asked to follow all transport rules and provide the right kind of vehicles.
New Services in Chennai
In Chennai, these mini-bus services will operate outside the main city centre but within the Corporation limits. A senior official said that more mini-buses will be added slowly as the applicants complete all required steps and bring in suitable vehicles.
These mini-buses will connect neighborhoods that have long needed better public transport. They are expected to offer a much-needed solution for people who depend on autos or private vehicles to travel short distances.
Helping People in Everyday Life
The main goal of this new mini-bus plan is to help people living in less-connected areas. The new routes will make it easier for them to reach schools, hospitals, markets, and offices. The service is meant to be both affordable and reliable, helping reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads, and possibly easing traffic in busy areas.
Chennai Mayor R Priya and District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade were present at the launch event. Their support shows how important this scheme is for the city's growth and public convenience.
