The Southern Railway has announced new steps to help people travelling on the busy Chennai Beach-Tambaram suburban train route, as recent construction work has made commuting harder. This redevelopment at Egmore railway station reduced regular train services, causing long waits and heavy crowds for commuters.

Local Trains with 15 Coaches
To make travel easier, the railway will now run fast local trains with 15 coaches (15-car EMUs) during morning and evening peak hours. These longer trains can carry more passengers and stop only at major stations like Tambaram, Mambalam, Guindy, Egmore, and Chennai Beach, making the trip faster, about 60 minutes instead of 75.
Special Buses
In addition to the 15-car trains, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will run 20 special buses each way during rush hours in the morning from Tambaram to Beach and in the evening back. These buses will come every seven minutes and stop at key points such as Tambaram Sanatorium, Chromepet, Pallavaram, Tirusulam, Guindy, Ezhilagam, Secretariat, and Parry's Corner. People who have valid train tickets or season passes won't need to pay extra to use these buses. This bus service is meant to provide commuters with another option if train services are crowded or delayed.
Why are the Local Trains Provided?
Because more fast local trains will use the tracks during busy hours, the departure time of the Cholan Express from Chennai Egmore has been changed to later in the morning. Also, two other long-distance trains, Nellai Express and Pothigai Express, will start and end at Tambaram instead of Egmore.
These changes are part of efforts to reduce travel inconvenience while the ongoing station upgrades continue.
