Passengers travelling through Chandigarh Railway Station may face inconvenience this week as Indian Railways has cancelled, diverted, rescheduled, and regulated several trains due to major infrastructure work on the Delhi-Ambala main railway line. The disruption will continue from May 30 to June 6 and is expected to affect thousands of travellers.

Railway Work Under Ambala Division
The upgrade work is being carried out between Shahabad Markanda and Mohri stations under the Ambala Division of Northern Railway. The project includes the expansion of loop lines and the installation of a modern Electronic Interlocking (EI) system, which will improve train operations and safety. To complete the work, the railway has imposed a six-day Pre-Non-Interlocking (PNI) block followed by a one-day Non-Interlocking (NI) block. Such blocks are necessary when major signalling systems are upgraded.
Cancellation of Trains
As a result, 22 trains have been completely cancelled, 29 trains have been diverted through alternate routes, 8 trains have been rescheduled, and 20 trains have been regulated, causing significant disruption to passengers.
Some of the most affected trains include the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath Express. Train number 12983 will remain cancelled on May 31 and June 2, while train number 12984 will not run on June 1 and June 3. The popular New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express and the Ajmer-Chandigarh Vande Bharat Express have also been cancelled on June 6.
Several long-distance trains are being diverted. The Chandigarh-Yesvantpur Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express will run through Ambala, Saharanpur, Meerut, and Ghaziabad on June 2, skipping Panipat and New Delhi. The Chandigarh-Madgaon Goa Sampark Kranti Express will also follow an alternate route on June 1.
Advisory for Passengers
Railway officials have advised passengers to check the latest status of their trains before travelling and make alternative arrangements if necessary. While the work is causing temporary inconvenience, the upgrade is expected to improve safety, efficiency, and train operations on one of India's busiest railway routes in the future.
