Mumbai Western Line's Technical Fault Impacted Commutation
According to Western Railway (WR) officials, a point failure occurred between the down fast and up slow lines at Andheri, one of the busiest sections of the suburban rail network, which immediately slowed the movement of trains in both directions. As slow trains heading towards Churchgate were delayed, the return services from Churchgate also ran late, creating a ripple effect across the line. WR claimed that the problem was fixed within half an hour by the authorities, but its impact lasted for hours, leading to the cancellation of 30 train services, and others continued to run behind schedule even after 8 PM. Moreover, railway authorities also made repeated announcements at the stations regarding the delay.
Passengers expressed anger online, posting photos and videos of jam-packed trains and overflowing platforms. Some complained that trains stood still for long periods, while others crawled along the tracks, worsening the evening rush. For commuters, the incident turned an ordinary weekday journey into a long and stressful one, underlining the challenges of Mumbai's heavily used suburban rail system.
