The Chambal Expressway, also known as the Atal Progressway, is a major upcoming road project that will connect three Indian states-Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Announced in 2021, this 402 km long expressway aims to reduce travel time, improve road connectivity, and promote tourism and industrial development in the region.
Route and Coverage
The expressway will begin from Simaliya in Kota, Rajasthan, pass through Madhya Pradesh, and end at Nanawa in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. It will cover 72 km in Rajasthan, 314 km in Madhya Pradesh, and 23 km in Uttar Pradesh. Once completed, the time taken to travel from Kota to Etawah will be reduced from around 12 hours to just 5 to 6 hours. This will make long-distance travel much faster and more comfortable.
Tourism and Natural Attractions
The expressway will also pass near several popular wildlife and eco-tourism sites. These include the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, Kuno National Park, and the Chambal Sanctuary. This makes the expressway a great route for tourists who want to explore nature and wildlife in central India. Easy access to these places is expected to boost tourism and create more jobs in nearby areas.
Linking with Other Expressways
Efforts are being made to connect the Chambal Expressway with other major expressways like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the Bundelkhand Expressway, and the Agra-Gwalior Greenfield Expressway. These connections will make it easier to travel from Kota to Delhi and other major cities. The expressway will also improve the movement of goods, helping industries grow by saving time and money on transport.
Project Status and Delays
Though the expressway brings many benefits, its construction has been delayed. So far, only the alignment work in Madhya Pradesh has been completed. Land acquisition is still pending in other areas. The project was approved by former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh in 2020, and it received construction approval in 2022. It is also included in the first phase of the Bharatmala project, which highlights its importance in India's national road development plans.
The Chambal Expressway is a key part of India's infrastructure development. It promises faster travel, better tourism opportunities, and improved business in the region.
