The skies are becoming more accessible for travelers in India, thanks to the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) flights that offer affordable air travel options. With base airfares starting as low as Rs 150, flying from Lilabari to Tezpur has never been more economical. Operated by Alliance Air, these flights are part of a government initiative to enhance regional connectivity and make air travel more affordable across the country.
Under the RCS, airline operators are incentivized to operate flights on underserved routes, resulting in a significant number of routes offering base ticket prices below Rs 1,000. This initiative aims to make air travel accessible to a wider segment of the population, particularly in regions like the North East.
The duration of RCS flights typically ranges around 50 minutes, providing a convenient option for short-haul travel. In addition to routes in the North East, there are also affordable options available in other parts of the country, such as Bangalore-Salem and Cochin-Salem, where base ticket prices are within the Rs 150 to Rs 199 range.
While some routes may have slightly higher base fares, such as the Guwahati-Pasighat and Lilabari-Guwahati routes, the overall objective of the RCS is to ensure that air travel remains affordable and accessible to all.
As of March 31, 2024, a total of 559 routes have been operationalized under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, known as UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). While some routes may experience lower demand, the initiative continues to play a crucial role in enhancing regional connectivity and making air travel more inclusive for all passengers.
In contrast, travelers on popular routes like Delhi to Mumbai are experiencing a surge in airfares. The one-way flight fare from Delhi to Mumbai has recently seen an increase of 12%, part of a broader trend affecting domestic flights this summer season. This surge in airfares is attributed to several factors, including Vistara flight cancellations, which have put pressure on other carriers to accommodate passengers, leading to higher prices. Additionally, the strong demand for air travel during the peak summer period has caused airlines to struggle to scale up capacity, resulting in increased fares.
For instance, the spot fare for a one-way trip from Mumbai to Delhi increased from Rs. 6,058 in March 2024 to Rs. 6,541 in April 2024, representing an 8% increase. Similar trends have been observed on other routes as well.
