The Bihar government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has taken a significant step to improve urban transport. On Thursday, the state cabinet approved metro projects in four additional cities: Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur. This decision follows the ongoing construction of the Patna Metro, whose foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, 2019.

Expansion of Metro Projects
In the recent cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Urban Development and Housing Department's proposal for metro rail projects in these four cities received approval. S Siddharth, the Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat), announced that feasibility reports will be prepared next. Following this, detailed project reports (DPR) will be finalized.
Funding and Implementation
The financial model for these metro projects involves both the central and state governments, each contributing 20% of the total cost. The remaining 60% will be funded by financial institutions. This approach aims to ensure the timely and efficient completion of the projects.
Progress on Patna Metro
Meanwhile, the Patna Metro project is making steady progress. In the first phase, five stations are expected to be operational by March next year. This phase includes 15.36 km of elevated track and 16.30 km of underground track, promising to significantly improve urban mobility in Patna.
Enhancements in Recruitment Exams
The cabinet also approved a proposal from the General Administration Department (GAD) to enhance the process of recruitment exams. To manage large numbers of candidates, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) are now authorized to conduct preliminary examinations in two phases. However, all subsequent exams will be held on specific dates in Patna and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, the cabinet has given the green light to conduct these examinations in both online and offline modes. This decision aims to streamline the recruitment process and make it more accessible for candidates across the state.
Boosting Sports Facilities
In another positive move, the cabinet approved a proposal from the sports department to open sports clubs in all panchayats across the state. This initiative is expected to promote sports and physical activities at the grassroots level, fostering a healthier and more active population.
The approval of metro projects in Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, and Bhagalpur marks a significant development in Bihar's urban infrastructure. These projects are set to enhance the quality of urban transport and cater to the growing needs of the population. Additionally, improvements in the recruitment exam process and the establishment of sports clubs highlight the government's commitment to holistic development in the state.
The Bihar government's proactive steps in expanding metro connectivity, streamlining recruitment processes, and promoting sports demonstrate a comprehensive approach to development. These initiatives are poised to bring significant benefits to the people of Bihar, contributing to the state's progress and prosperity.
