Bengaluru is all set to welcome its first double-decker flyover, a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure development. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that the 3.3 km road flyover stretching from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board (CSB) along the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra) is now complete. Starting from June 15, vehicles will be allowed to use this new flyover after a final inspection by the authorities.

Key Features of the Flyover
The flyover is designed with two levels:
- The lower deck is for vehicles.
- The upper deck is for the Namma Metro.
This unique design aims to ease traffic congestion and provide a smoother commute for both road and metro users. The flyover stands eight meters above the road, while the metro runs at a height of 16 meters.
Ramps and Connectivity
BMRCL is also constructing five ramps at the CSB junction to improve connectivity:
- Ramps A, B, and C: These connect KR Puram and Hosur Road from Ragigudda/BTM Layout and will be open in June.
- Ramps D and E: These will connect KR Puram to BTM Layout and Ragigudda and are expected to be ready by June 2025.
The CSB junction, known for heavy traffic, will become signal-free, reducing congestion during rush hours. This area will also feature two new Metro stations:
- The Blue Line (CSB to KR Puram)
- The Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra)
Although these stations were initially planned to be integrated, they will now be about 355 meters apart and connected by a travelator for ease of access.
Metro Trial Runs and Future Plans
Today marks a significant step as Bengaluru Metro conducts a trial run on the entire Electronics City corridor (Yellow Line: RV Road to Bommasandra). This trial run, initially scheduled for June 7 but postponed due to technical issues, is crucial for linking Bengaluru's tech hub, Electronics City, which houses major companies like Infosys and Biocon, to the metro network.
The 18.8-km Yellow Line was originally set to open in 2021 but has faced delays, now rescheduled to December 2024. Mainline testing by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will take about four months, followed by further approvals before it can open to the public. Delays were primarily due to the late arrival of coaches from China's CRRC and Titagarh.
Benefits of the New Infrastructure
The double-decker flyover is expected to bring multiple benefits:
- Reduced Traffic Congestion: The signal-free corridor will ease traffic flow, particularly during peak hours.
- Improved Connectivity: With new ramps and metro stations, commuting across Bengaluru will become more efficient.
- Modern Infrastructure: Following the example of similar structures in cities like Jaipur, Nagpur, and Mumbai, Bengaluru's new flyover is a step towards modernizing the city's infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
The successful completion and opening of the double-decker flyover mark a significant achievement for Bengaluru's urban development. As the city continues to grow, such infrastructure projects are crucial for meeting the demands of its residents and enhancing the overall quality of life. The BMRCL's efforts in expanding and modernizing the metro network, along with improving road connectivity, are set to transform commuting in Bengaluru, making it more efficient and less stressful for everyone.
