Bengaluru Records Unusual Heat, Surpassing Delhi’s 27°C, Temperatures Hit Record Highs

Bengaluru, known for its pleasant weather, is now experiencing unexpected heat. On February 17, 2025, the city recorded a high temperature of 35.9°C, making it hotter than Delhi, which had a cooler 27°C on the same day. This sudden rise in temperature signals an early arrival of summer, different from the usual weather pattern Bengaluru follows.

Unusual February Heat

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this year's February is 2.7°C warmer than last year. Bengaluru is now seeing temperatures similar to Raichur and Kalaburagi, areas that are usually much hotter. This heatwave-like condition is due to two main reasons:

1. Lack of northern winds, which usually help cool the city.

2. Impact of La Niña, a global climate pattern affecting ocean temperatures and weather worldwide.

However, the city still enjoys cooler nights, with temperatures around 17°C, giving residents some relief from the hot days. The IMD also warns that this **rising temperature trend may continue, turning into a long-term change rather than a temporary shift.

What This Means for Bengaluru

With summer arriving earlier than usual, there are growing concerns about its effects on daily life, such as:

- Increased electricity use due to air conditioners and fans running for longer hours.
- Water shortages, as higher temperatures increase demand for water.
- Health issues, such as heat exhaustion and dehydration, especially for children and the elderly.

Though Bengaluru is not yet at risk of a heatwave, other parts of northern and coastal Karnataka may face extreme temperatures in the coming months.

What's Next?

Bengaluru residents should prepare for a hotter March and April, as summer is setting in earlier than before. Experts say this weather shift may become the new normal due to climate changes like La Niña. If the warming trend continues, Bengaluru may experience even hotter summers in the future.

While cooler evenings provide some relief, the reality is that the city's climate is changing. Being prepared for high temperatures is now more important than ever. As Bengaluru moves toward a hotter future, awareness and action will be key in dealing with the changing climate.
