Bengaluru Rain Alert: Bengaluru is Likely to Experience Rainfall & Thunderstorms in Scattered Parts

Bengaluru received widespread thundershowers on Tuesday evening as people eagerly waited for the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Karnataka. The rain brought relief from the recent hot and humid weather. Many parts of the city experienced moderate to heavy rain along with strong and gusty winds, which also caused traffic problems during the busy evening hours.

Bengaluru Weather

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heaviest rain was recorded in the northern and northeastern parts of Bengaluru. Around 60% of the city experienced rainfall, while southern and southeastern areas received light to moderate showers. Bengaluru recorded 17.8 mm of rainfall overall, while HAL areas received 4.8 mm. Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 35 kmph were also reported. Due to the heavy winds and rain, trees were uprooted, and branches fell in several places across the city.

Effects of Bengaluru's Thundershowers

The weather also affected Namma Metro services on the Purple Line. Around 6 pm, a tree branch fell on the metro tracks between ITPB and Sathya Sai Hospital stations. Because of this, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) stopped metro services between Whitefield and Garudacharpalya stations for nearly 30 minutes. Around 10 metro stations were affected during the peak travel time.

Many commuters complained about overcrowding at metro stations and said BMRCL did not provide quick updates about the disruption. Some passengers first thought the delay was caused by a technical problem.

Bengaluru Rain Alert

IMD officials said that Bengaluru and other parts of south-interior Karnataka may soon see the end of pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity. IMD scientist CS Patil said Tuesday's rain could be one of the last major pre-monsoon showers before the southwest monsoon fully arrives. However, a few isolated showers may continue for the next few days. Bengaluru is likely to experience a partly cloudy sky along with one or two spells of rain, thunderstorms & lightning on Wednesday. The minimum temperature is expected to be around 22°C, while the maximum may reach 34°C. Humidity levels are likely to stay between 45% and 70%.
